When Lange introduced the original Zeitwerk in 2009, the concept of a purely mechanical jumping digital display was so far outside established convention that many in the industry doubted it could work reliably. The challenge was fundamental: traditional jumping-hour mechanisms use the energy stored in the mainspring to advance a single disc once per hour, a relatively modest mechanical task. The Zeitwerk advances two discs, one for hours and one for minutes, with the minute disc jumping every sixty seconds and the hour disc turning over simultaneously with it at the top of each hour. The energy required for these instantaneous jumps, particularly the combined hour-and-minute transition, is enormous by the standards of wristwatch movements, and delivering it while maintaining consistent amplitude in the balance wheel required an entirely new approach to power transmission.
The Decimal Strike, Ref. 143.050, takes this already extraordinary mechanism and adds a further layer of complication: an acoustic striking system that sounds at ten-minute intervals. The concept draws on the tradition of decimal repeaters, rare in watchmaking history, which divide time into ten-minute segments rather than the more conventional quarter-hours. Every ten minutes, a hammer strikes a higher-pitched gong, marking the passage of each decimal interval. On the hour, a separate hammer strikes a lower-pitched gong, distinguishing the hourly chime from the ten-minute strikes. The result is a watch that announces the approximate time audibly, without the owner needing to activate a pusher or slide, throughout the day.
The mechanical challenge of combining a jumping digital display with an automatic striking mechanism cannot be overstated. Both systems draw heavily on the mainspring's energy: the jumping discs require sudden bursts of torque, and the striking mechanism requires its own energy to drive the hammers against the gongs. The Calibre L043.7 manages these competing demands through 528 components, a parts count that reflects the sheer density of mechanical architecture required. The movement operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz), a deliberately low frequency that conserves energy for the power-hungry complications, and delivers a 36-hour power reserve, respectable given the energy demands placed upon it but not generous enough to forgive a missed winding. The power reserve indicator at twelve o'clock, marked "AB" (down) and "AUF" (up), is not a decorative flourish but a practical necessity: the striking mechanism ceases operation as the power reserve falls below a certain threshold, protecting the accuracy of the timekeeping by prioritising the balance wheel's energy supply over the acoustic complication.
The dial of the 143.050 is a study in controlled visual drama. The two aperture windows displaying the hours (left) and minutes (right) are large, clear, and immediately legible, framed by the silver dial's surface architecture. Between and around the apertures, raised bridge elements are finished with tremblage engraving, a hand-executed technique that produces a finely textured, frost-like surface by stippling the metal with a burin. This tremblage finishing, reminiscent of Lange's Handwerkskunst editions, elevates the dial from functional display to decorative object without sacrificing legibility. The small seconds subdial sits at six o'clock, its honey gold hand sweeping continuously against a chapter ring that provides the dial's only conventional horological element. The overall composition is symmetrical, architectural, and unlike anything else in watchmaking.
The case material deserves particular attention. Honey gold is Lange's proprietary 18k gold alloy, developed in-house and used exclusively by the manufacture. Its composition, which Lange does not disclose in full, produces a colour that is warmer and more saturated than conventional rose gold, closer to the deep amber tone of aged honey. More importantly for a 44.2 mm wristwatch, honey gold is significantly harder than standard 18k gold, which means it resists the surface scratches and dents that would quickly accumulate on a softer alloy. At 13.1 mm thick, the Zeitwerk Decimal Strike has genuine wrist presence, and the honey gold case handles daily wear with a durability that its warm, luxurious appearance might not suggest.
Through the sapphire caseback, the Calibre L043.7 displays Lange's full finishing programme applied to a movement of unusual mechanical density. The three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, the hand-engraved balance cock, the Glashutte ribbing, the blued screws, the polished bevels: all are present, executed to the standard that Lange has maintained since Walter Lange presented the first four post-reunification watches in 1994. The striking mechanism's hammers and their bridge are visible, as are the constant-force mechanism components that regulate the jumping display's energy delivery. It is a caseback that rewards extended study, not because its finishing is ostentatious, but because the sheer mechanical invention it contains takes time to comprehend.
For collectors, the Zeitwerk Decimal Strike in honey gold is one of those watches that defines a decade. Limited to 100 pieces, fitted with a movement that exists in no other reference, executed in a proprietary material available from no other manufacturer, it is a watch that cannot be compared because nothing else attempts what it does. It is the Lange that proves the house's ambitions extend far beyond the conventional boundaries of traditional Saxon watchmaking, without ever abandoning the finishing standards and material integrity that give those traditions their meaning.
