About the brand

In the landscape of contemporary haute horlogerie, few brands have challenged tradition with the audacity, creativity, and technical brilliance of Urwerk. Founded in 1997 by master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and industrial designer Martin Frei, Urwerk redefined what a wristwatch could be — not merely a machine to tell time, but an object that narrates time through art, architecture, and kinetic sculpture.

Felix Baumgartner, the son of a renowned clock restorer, inherited a deep respect for mechanical craftsmanship. His early experiences working on historical clocks, combined with formal education at the esteemed watchmaking school of Solothurn and later tenure under independent legend Svend Andersen, honed his technical expertise to the highest standard. Meanwhile, Martin Frei brought an entirely different, yet complementary, vision to the partnership. With a background in graphic arts and industrial design, Frei approached watchmaking as a canvas for storytelling, form, and science fiction-inspired imagination.

Together, they embarked on a mission that few others dared: to challenge the classical codes of watchmaking, not by discarding mechanical complexity, but by reinterpreting it through a futuristic lens. Their goal was clear from the beginning — to create "the watch of the future as seen from the past."

At the heart of Urwerk’s philosophy lies the concept of time as a fluid, three-dimensional phenomenon. The brand quickly became synonymous with satellite hours displays, orbital indications, and wandering hours complications — all brought to life through intricate mechanical choreography. The release of the Urwerk 101 in 1997 introduced the world to their unconventional vision, but it was the launch of the 103 collection in 2003 that truly solidified their reputation. The 103’s radical design, with its domed sapphire crystal, sculptural gold case, and satellite hours gliding across a 120-degree arc, captured the imagination of collectors and connoisseurs worldwide. It was no longer just about reading the time — it was about experiencing it.

Urwerk’s technical innovations have always been matched by their aesthetic audacity. Their designs borrow liberally from the realms of space exploration, retro-futurism, and architecture, yet always remain wearable and coherent. References like the UR-210 with its "control board" indicating winding efficiency, or the UR-100 with its cosmic mapping of Earth's rotation, show how deeply the brand engages with concepts beyond traditional horology.

One of Urwerk’s most groundbreaking achievements is its commitment to user interaction. Watches like the UR-CC1 King Cobra display linear time indication across horizontal rollers, while the UR-T8 Transformer features a pivoting case that protects the dial. Perhaps most fascinating is the "fine-tuning" screw found in early references like the 103.01, allowing the wearer to personally adjust the watch’s rate — a sophisticated nod to 18th-century pocket watches rarely seen in modern wristwatches.

Despite their avant-garde approach, Urwerk has maintained a strict adherence to traditional Swiss craftsmanship. Each movement is meticulously hand-finished, each complication engineered for precision and durability. The technical base may be radical, but the finishing and dedication to quality are deeply classical — a balance that only the finest independent brands achieve.

Today, Urwerk stands as a pillar of the independent watchmaking renaissance, a symbol of what can happen when technical mastery meets artistic freedom. They have expanded the vocabulary of horology, showing that a watch can be at once a mechanical marvel, a philosophical statement, and a wearable piece of kinetic art.

For collectors who seek more than tradition — for those who appreciate imagination, audacity, and genuine horological innovation — Urwerk remains one of the purest and most exhilarating expressions of modern independent watchmaking.

About the watch

At The Second Hand Club, we are proud to offer the Urwerk 103.01 EW — a milestone creation that signaled the arrival of Urwerk as one of the true innovators of contemporary independent watchmaking. Founded by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, Urwerk emerged from the complementary talents of a master watchmaker and an industrial designer. Felix, whose early training came from restoring historic clocks in his father’s atelier before attending the esteemed watchmaking school of Solothurn, refined his craft alongside independent legends such as Svend Andersen. Martin Frei, with his background in graphic and industrial design, brought a radically new aesthetic language that would define Urwerk’s unmistakable identity.

The Urwerk 103.01 EW marks the inaugural reference of the celebrated 103 series, produced in an extremely limited edition of just 25 pieces in white gold and 25 in rose gold. With the 103.01 EW, Urwerk reimagined the traditional wandering hours complication through the lens of science fiction, creating a futuristic yet mechanically poetic timepiece. It is widely regarded as the watch that catapulted Urwerk into the spotlight — thanks to both its technical reinterpretation of wandering hours and its bold, spaceship-like case design.

Crafted in white gold, the case of this 103.01 EW has acquired a gentle patina over time, lending it the allure of a treasured artifact, not unlike a well-worn gold coin. The linear engravings that run vertically across the curved case enhance its sculptural form, while the domed sapphire crystal — arching over the display — offers a full panoramic view of the orbital time indication beneath. The architecture of the watch evokes an otherworldly presence on the wrist, a signature that has become synonymous with the Urwerk name.

Time is displayed via three rotating satellite discs, each bearing numerals that glide across a 120-degree minute arc. Each satellite completes a full revolution every three hours, creating a mesmerizing kinetic display that captures the essence of dynamic time-telling.

Powering the Urwerk 103.01 EW is the manual-winding calibre 3.03, notable not only for its technical innovation but also for a rarely seen feature: a user-adjustable fine-tuning screw positioned on the caseback. This elegant mechanism allows the wearer to regulate the movement’s accuracy by up to 30 seconds per day — a nod to traditional pocketwatch craftsmanship rarely encountered in modern horology.

The Urwerk 103.01 EW stands as a seminal piece in the world of independent watchmaking — a watch that bridges art, mechanics, and imagination in one singular creation.
