About the brand

François-Paul Journe's decision to produce the Ruthenium series between 2002 and 2006 reveals something important about the watchmaker's sensibility during the brand's formative years. At a time when most independent makers were focused simply on establishing production and finding clients, Journe was already experimenting with limited series, alternative finishing treatments, and material choices that went beyond commercial necessity. The Ruthenium collection was not driven by market demand; it was driven by aesthetic curiosity, by the question of what his movements and dials would look like under a different finishing philosophy. That willingness to explore, even when the brand was still proving itself commercially, is what separates Journe from his contemporaries.

Journe founded his manufacture in 1999 under the motto "invenit et fecit," invented and made. The Octa collection, introduced shortly after, was his answer to the question of what a modern automatic watch should be. Where most manufactures treated the automatic movement as a utilitarian convenience, Journe approached it as an engineering challenge: how to extract maximum power reserve, maximum complication capability, and maximum finishing quality from a self-winding architecture. The Calibre 1300, with its 120-hour reserve and its capacity to support chronograph, calendar, and moon phase complications, was the result. In the Ruthenium series, that movement received a finishing treatment that elevated it from mechanical accomplishment to visual art.

The brass movement era, 1999 to 2004, is now universally recognised as the most collectible period of Journe's production. These watches were made in small numbers, with modest resources, by a maker who was building his reputation one watch at a time. The ruthenium-coated examples, limited to just 99 pieces, represent the rarest subset of that already scarce production. For collectors who understand the significance of early Journe watches, the Ruthenium Octa Chronographe is not merely a fine chronograph. It is an artefact from the most intense and creatively fertile period of one of the most important independent watchmakers alive.

About the watch

The Ruthenium series occupies a singular place in F.P. Journe's history. Produced between 2002 and 2006, limited to 99 individually numbered pieces per model, and executed exclusively in platinum, these watches were conceived as a distinct collection within the broader Octa family. What set them apart was not only the dial treatment but the movement finishing itself. Where standard brass movement Journe watches received conventional rhodium plating, the Ruthenium series had their movements coated in ruthenium, a platinum group metal that produces a noticeably darker, smokier appearance on the mainplate and bridges. The effect, visible through the sapphire caseback, is immediately recognisable. The golden elements of the balance wheel, the gear train wheels, and the engraved text on the bridges stand out with heightened contrast against the darker ground, creating a visual intensity that the standard rhodium-plated brass movements do not share.

The 40 mm platinum case follows the proportions established for the Octa collection, and at approximately 10 mm thick it maintains a slim profile that belies the mechanical density within. Platinum's cool weight and silvery lustre complement the ruthenium palette beautifully; this is a thoroughly monochromatic watch, with the dark grey of the dial and movement offset only by the warmth of the gold elements and the vivid blue of the steel hands. The case finishing is pure Journe: high-polished surfaces, a gently domed bezel, and the seamless integration of case to lugs that characterises all of his designs. On the wrist, the platinum Octa Chronographe has a presence that transcends its modest dimensions. The density of the metal gives it a physical authority that rose gold and steel cannot replicate.

The dial is where the ruthenium treatment makes its strongest aesthetic statement. Executed in ruthenium over gold with a whitened guilloché silver substrate, the surface has a depth and textural complexity that shifts constantly with changes in light. In some conditions it reads as a deep, matte charcoal; in others, the metallic sheen of the ruthenium catches light and reveals warmer undertones beneath. The layout follows the Octa Chronographe's established architecture: off-centre hours and minutes, a large date window, small seconds at six o'clock, a central chronograph seconds hand, and a 30-minute counter at nine o'clock. The blued steel hands are a particularly effective pairing with the ruthenium surface, their vivid blue providing a chromatic accent that elevates the entire dial composition.

The Calibre 1300 powering this watch is the brass movement version of Journe's Octa automatic platform, here with the ruthenium coating that defines the series. The movement delivers 120 hours of power reserve from a single barrel, an achievement that remains extraordinary for an automatic chronograph. The flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted instantaneously with a single pusher press, and the large date changes instantaneously at midnight. The base plate features perlage decoration, while the bridges carry circular striping, both rendered in the darker ruthenium tone. Through the caseback, the overall visual impression is of a movement that feels both more dramatic and more unified than its rhodium-plated counterpart. The ruthenium acts as a kind of visual editing, reducing the contrast between plate and bridge to create a more cohesive mechanical landscape against which the golden and polished components stand out with greater clarity.

For collectors, the Ruthenium Octa Chronographe sits at the intersection of three powerful collecting currents. First, it is a brass movement Journe, belonging to the finite pool of approximately 2,000 watches produced before the 2004 transition to rose gold calibres. Second, it is from the Ruthenium limited series, restricted to just 99 numbered examples. Third, the Octa Chronographe is one of the most mechanically complete and practically wearable watches Journe has ever made, a genuine daily-wear flyback chronograph with five days of power reserve. That combination of historical significance, numerical scarcity, and functional excellence makes it one of the most compelling watches to emerge from any independent manufacture in the early 2000s. Examples surface infrequently, and when they do, they tend to disappear into collections where they remain for years.
