About the brand

A. Lange & Söhne occupies a unique position in modern haute horlogerie. Its origins date to 1845, when Ferdinand Adolph Lange established his manufacture in Glashütte and helped transform the small Saxon town into the center of German precision watchmaking.

The company’s history was interrupted following the Second World War, but nearly half a century later, Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s great-grandson Walter Lange revived the family name. In 1994, A. Lange & Söhne unveiled its first modern collection, beginning one of the most remarkable renaissances in contemporary watchmaking.

Rather than simply reproducing its historic pocket watches, the reborn manufacture established a new and immediately recognizable design language. German-silver movement plates, hand-engraved balance cocks, screwed gold chatons and traditional Glashütte finishing were combined with innovative modern complications and unmistakably German aesthetics.

The early years following the revival are especially important to collectors today. Production remained comparatively small, and watches from this period often display a degree of experimentation that makes them fascinating alongside the manufacture’s better-known icons.

The 1815 Moon Phase Ref. 231.031 exemplifies this era. Created as a tribute to Emil Lange — who joined the family business with his brother Richard and helped expand its international reputation — it connected the newly revived manufacture directly to the family responsible for establishing its original legacy.

Today, A. Lange & Söhne stands alongside the world’s most respected haute horlogerie manufactures, yet its identity remains distinctly Saxon. For collectors, early references such as the 1815 Moon Phase offer something particularly compelling: watches produced close to the beginning of Lange’s modern rebirth, when the manufacture was once again establishing exactly what an A. Lange & Söhne wristwatch could be.

About the watch

The A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Moon Phase Ref. 231.031 “Hommage à Emil Lange” belongs to a particularly fascinating chapter in the modern history of the Glashütte manufacture. Introduced in 1999, only a few years after A. Lange & Söhne returned to watchmaking, the reference was created to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Emil Lange, the second son of founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange.

Production was appropriately exclusive. Only 250 examples were created in pink gold, alongside an even smaller platinum edition, making the Ref. 231.031 one of the more distinctive limited-production Lange watches of the period.

At just 36mm in diameter, the pink gold case embodies the restrained proportions of early modern Lange. Yet it is the black dial that gives the watch its extraordinary personality. Instead of the restrained silver dials traditionally associated with Saxon watchmaking, Lange created a miniature representation of the night sky.

Pink-gold stars replace the conventional hour markers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, while a large Arabic numeral marks 12. Across the lower-left portion of the dial stretches a depiction of the Big Dipper, with the moon-phase indication positioned among the constellation. An off-center subsidiary seconds register provides balance on the opposite side of the dial.

The astronomical theme is more than decorative. The moon-phase mechanism was engineered with extraordinary precision, calculated to require a correction of only one day after approximately 1,058 years of continuous operation. It is the sort of excessive mechanical precision that perfectly encapsulates A. Lange & Söhne’s approach to watchmaking.

Behind the dial is the manually wound Calibre L943.1, a movement produced specifically for this limited-edition 1815 Moon Phase. Constructed around a German-silver architecture, it features 26 jewels, gold chatons, traditional Glashütte finishing, a swan-neck regulator and the hand-engraved balance cock that has become one of Lange’s signatures.

The Ref. 231.031 is particularly compelling today because it combines several qualities collectors increasingly seek in early A. Lange & Söhne: small dimensions, precious-metal construction, extremely limited production, a dedicated movement and an unconventional dial that was never absorbed into regular production.

More than two decades after its introduction, the 1815 Moon Phase “Hommage à Emil Lange” remains unlike almost anything else Lange has produced. Romantic where the manufacture is normally austere and playful without sacrificing mechanical seriousness, the Ref. 231.031 is a fascinating artifact from the formative years of modern A. Lange & Söhne — and one of the most distinctive neo-vintage Lange watches for the collector.
