About the brand

Founded by brothers Bart and Tim Grönefeld, the Grönefeld manufacture represents the continuation of a long Dutch watchmaking tradition rooted in the town of Oldenzaal. Often referred to as the “Horological Brothers,” the pair come from a family of watchmakers spanning multiple generations.

After training at some of Switzerland’s most prestigious watchmaking institutions and working for leading haute horlogerie brands, the brothers returned to the Netherlands with a vision: create watches that combine traditional mechanical innovation with exceptional finishing standards.

Grönefeld watches quickly gained international recognition for their technical originality. Their movements frequently incorporate sophisticated mechanisms, such as the remontoire constant-force system, while maintaining a distinctive architectural style and exceptional hand-finishing.

Despite growing acclaim, production remains extremely limited, ensuring each watch retains a sense of exclusivity and artisanal authenticity. Today, Grönefeld pieces are considered among the most respected examples of modern independent watchmaking.

Collaborations with artisans like Kari Voutilainen further reinforce the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship, pairing mechanical ingenuity with some of the finest dial work in contemporary horology.

About the watch

The Grönefeld 1941 Remontoire 8 Seconds is widely considered one of the most technically fascinating watches produced by the independent Dutch manufacture. Designed by brothers Bart and Tim Grönefeld, the watch showcases a remarkable remontoire d’égalité, a constant-force mechanism that delivers energy to the escapement in perfectly regulated intervals.

In this case, the remontoire releases its stored energy every eight seconds, ensuring a consistent flow of power to the balance and improving chronometric stability. This mechanism also creates the watch’s distinctive jumping seconds display, where the seconds hand advances in precise eight-second increments, a visual signature of the complication.

What makes this particular example extraordinary is its bespoke dial produced by Kari Voutilainen, one of the most respected artisans in contemporary watchmaking. Known for his mastery of traditional engine-turning techniques, Voutilainen’s dials are crafted using centuries-old guilloché machines and finished entirely by hand.

The deep red guilloché dial brings a level of warmth and character rarely seen in the 1941 Remontoire. The intricate pattern captures light beautifully, creating subtle variations in tone that shift depending on the angle of the wrist. Combined with the refined typography and classical layout, the dial adds a unique layer of artistry to an already exceptional mechanical watch.

Turning the watch over reveals the beautifully finished Calibre G-02 manual-wind movement, widely admired among collectors for its architectural elegance and meticulous finishing. The large bridge layout, polished bevels, heat-blued screws, and hand-engraved details reflect the Grönefeld brothers’ dedication to traditional craftsmanship.

The result is a watch that sits at the crossroads of precision engineering and artisanal watchmaking. A modern independent creation that celebrates both technical innovation and decorative mastery.
