About the brand

Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, in the Vallée de Joux, and it remains family-owned to this day, a distinction shared by very few manufactures of comparable stature. That continuity of ownership matters. It has allowed the brand to make decisions over generations rather than quarterly earnings cycles, and it explains how a single design, the Royal Oak, could be given the time and space to become the most influential luxury sports watch in history.

When Gérald Genta presented his sketch for the Royal Oak in 1972, Audemars Piguet was already a century-old maker of complicated pocket and wristwatches with a deep reputation for finishing and technical innovation. The decision to produce a luxury watch in stainless steel, with an integrated bracelet and an octagonal bezel inspired by a diver's helmet, was a calculated risk. It succeeded because the execution was flawless: the case finishing, the bracelet construction, the ultra-thin 2121 movement sourced from a collaboration with Jaeger-LeCoultre, all combined to create something that justified its price through craft rather than material value alone.

The Royal Oak's influence on the broader industry is impossible to overstate. The Patek Philippe Nautilus, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas, and dozens of subsequent designs owe their existence to what Audemars Piguet proved possible in 1972. But what separates the Royal Oak from its imitators is the depth of refinement in its execution. The alternation of brushed and polished surfaces on the case and bracelet, the precision of the bezel screws, the way the integrated bracelet flows from the case without visible transition: these are details that require extraordinary manufacturing capability, and Audemars Piguet has spent fifty years perfecting them. The 16202ST, with its new Calibre 7121 and subtly evolved case construction, is the latest expression of that half-century commitment to a single, uncompromising idea.

About the watch

The Royal Oak "Jumbo" has always occupied a singular position in watchmaking. It is not simply a sports watch, nor simply a dress watch, nor simply an icon of design. It is the watch that created an entire category, the one that proved stainless steel could command a price reserved for precious metals, and the reference against which every integrated-bracelet luxury sports watch launched in the past five decades has been measured. The Ref. 16202ST, introduced in 2022 as the 50th anniversary successor to the 15202ST, carries all of that history on its wrist. That it does so with such apparent ease is precisely what makes it remarkable.

The 39 mm stainless steel case maintains the proportions that Gérald Genta established in 1972, when the original Ref. 5402 arrived as something the industry had never seen before. The octagonal bezel with its eight exposed hexagonal screws, the seamless integration of case into bracelet, the combination of brushed and polished surfaces: these are details so widely imitated that it is easy to forget how radical they once were. At just 8.1 mm thick, the 16202ST sits extraordinarily flat on the wrist, a quality that distinguishes the "Jumbo" from every other Royal Oak variant. It wears with a lightness and intimacy that larger, thicker references simply cannot match. The tapering of the bracelet, the way it drapes and conforms to the wrist rather than sitting on top of it, remains one of the finest examples of bracelet engineering in production watchmaking.

The dial is where the Royal Oak's visual identity lives, and the 16202ST's blue "Grande Tapisserie" surface delivers it beautifully. The pattern of small, raised squares catches light differently with every movement, shifting between deep navy and a brighter, almost electric blue depending on the angle. Applied white gold hour markers and Royal Oak hands sit above the texture with clean separation, and the overall effect is one of depth and richness that photographs rarely capture accurately. In person, the dial has a three-dimensionality that rewards sustained attention. The date aperture at three o'clock is the only interruption to an otherwise pure time-only layout, and its integration feels natural rather than forced.

Behind the caseback beats the Calibre 7121, and this is where the 16202ST quietly distinguishes itself from its predecessors. The 2121 movement, which powered the "Jumbo" for decades, was a masterpiece of thin automatic watchmaking but had reached the limits of what could be refined within its original architecture. The 7121 is a complete redesign: same 3.2 mm thinness, same 4 Hz frequency, but with a 55-hour power reserve (up from approximately 40 hours) and a modernised construction that addresses long-term serviceability. The rotor is finished with Côtes de Genève, and the movement architecture, visible through the sapphire caseback, maintains the visual character that collectors expect while delivering genuinely improved performance. It is the kind of evolution that respects what came before without being constrained by it.

For collectors, the 16202ST occupies a fascinating position. It is the current-production "Jumbo," the direct descendant of the 5402 and the 15202, and it carries all the desirability that lineage implies. The 15202ST, now discontinued, has already begun its ascent in the secondary market as collectors recognise it as the final chapter of the 2121-powered era. The 16202ST, meanwhile, represents the beginning of a new chapter, one that will almost certainly be looked back on as a pivotal moment in the Royal Oak's evolution. Whether a collector values it for its connection to the past or its position at the start of something new, the result is the same: this is the purest Royal Oak in current production.
