About the brand

Patek Philippe has spent nearly two centuries building a reputation that rests on a single, powerful idea: that a watch made today should be worth passing to the next generation. The phrase "You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation" is marketing, but it is marketing that reflects a genuine philosophy. Patek Philippe builds watches with long-term value in mind, both mechanical and emotional, and that orientation toward permanence defines everything from the brand's choice of materials to its finishing standards to its reluctance to follow trends.

The Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A is fascinating precisely because it appears, at first glance, to contradict that philosophy. The orange accents, the composite strap, the embossed tropical dial: these are design choices that feel contemporary, even fashion-forward, and they represent a Patek Philippe that is willing to court a collector who might otherwise buy a Royal Oak or a Nautilus without considering the Aquanaut. But look closer and the 5968A is as much a Patek Philippe as any perpetual calendar Calatrava. The Calibre CH 28-520 C is a column wheel flyback chronograph of 308 components, finished to the standard required by the Patek Philippe seal. The case is crafted from steel to tolerances that exceed what most brands achieve in gold. The movement, invisible behind a solid caseback, is finished on every surface, including those that no owner will ever see. Patek Philippe's commitment to excellence does not waver because the strap is orange.

What the 5968A reveals about Patek Philippe is that the brand's conservatism is selective rather than absolute. When Patek commits to a sports watch, it does so with the same mechanical seriousness and finishing rigour that it brings to a minute repeater. The Aquanaut Chronograph is not a concession to the market. It is Patek Philippe applying its standards to a new context, and doing so with enough confidence to add a splash of orange. For collectors who understand the brand, that confidence is what makes the 5968A not just a desirable watch but a significant one.

About the watch

When Patek Philippe introduced the Aquanaut in 1997, it was a calculated risk. The brand that embodied classical Genevan watchmaking was offering a watch with a rubber strap, a tropical pattern on the dial, and a case shape that owed more to the 1970s sports watch revolution than to the Calatrava. The Aquanaut survived the scepticism, found its audience, and by the time the 5968A appeared at Baselworld 2018, the collection had become one of Patek's most commercially important lines. The addition of a chronograph, in steel, with orange accents, was the logical next step for a collection that had always been Patek's most forward-looking. It was also a statement. Patek Philippe does not make many steel chronographs, and when it does, the result tends to become an object of intense collector desire.

The 42.2 mm case is the largest in the Aquanaut range, and the additional diameter suits the chronograph layout. The octagonal bezel, a softened version of the Nautilus's angular design, features alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces that create a play of texture around the dial's perimeter. The case sides are satin-brushed, the crown and chronograph pushers are polished, and the overall proportions, at 11.9 mm thick, keep the watch from feeling bulky despite its size. The case is rated to 120 metres of water resistance, adequate for a sports watch though well below the 300-metre standard of a dedicated dive watch. The screw-down crown and pushers provide the necessary sealing, and the caseback is solid, engraved with the Aquanaut emblem. This is not a watch designed for the deep ocean. It is designed for the life that happens around it.

The black dial is embossed with the Aquanaut's signature tropical pattern, a grid of recessed squares that gives the surface a texture visible at close range and a depth that flat dials cannot achieve. Against this dark, patterned ground, the orange chronograph elements are vivid and immediate. The central chronograph seconds hand is orange. The sixty-minute counter at six o'clock, a subsidiary dial with its own orange hand and orange minute markers, is orange. The elapsed-time scale printed around the dial's outer edge is orange. The effect is not subtle. Patek Philippe, a brand that typically communicates in whispers, chose with the 5968A to raise its voice, and the orange accents give the watch a personality that is entirely distinct from anything else in the catalogue. The hour and minute hands are white gold with luminescent coating, the applied numerals are white gold, and the date window sits at three o'clock, framed by a subtle aperture that does not disrupt the dial's overall rhythm.

The Calibre CH 28-520 C is one of Patek Philippe's most sophisticated automatic movements. The "CH" designates a chronograph, the "28" refers to the calibre's diameter in millimetres, the "520" is the calibre number, and the "C" indicates the addition of a date complication. The movement uses a column wheel to control the chronograph's start, stop, and reset functions, and a vertical clutch to engage the chronograph gear train. The vertical clutch is significant because it eliminates the slight stutter that can occur when a chronograph is started using a traditional lateral clutch: the seconds hand moves immediately and smoothly from the moment the pusher is pressed. The flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted with a single press of the lower pusher, without needing to stop the chronograph first, a feature originally developed for aviation timing and now valued by collectors as a mark of mechanical sophistication. The movement comprises 308 components across 32 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and delivers between 45 and 55 hours of power reserve. Through the solid caseback the movement is invisible, but the finishing, visible only to the watchmaker, is to the Patek Philippe standard: Geneva Stripes on the bridges, bevelled edges, mirror-polished screw heads, and the Patek Philippe seal that guarantees both the quality of finishing and the accuracy of the movement to minus three, plus two seconds per day.

The strap is an integral part of the 5968A's identity. The watch is supplied with two composite straps, one black and one orange, both secured by a stainless steel Aquanaut fold-over clasp. The composite material, a rubber-like polymer developed specifically for the Aquanaut, is resistant to UV degradation, saltwater, and the oils in human skin, and it retains its shape and colour far longer than natural rubber. The orange strap is the configuration that defines the 5968A in most collectors' minds, and pairing it with the orange dial accents creates a visual coherence that gives the watch its distinctive, almost sportswear-like character. Switching to the black strap transforms the watch into something considerably more restrained, with the orange accents on the dial becoming isolated highlights rather than part of a broader colour story. The ability to shift the watch's personality with a strap change is a practical advantage that few mechanical chronographs offer.

For collectors, the 5968A occupies a rarefied position. It is a steel Patek Philippe chronograph, a category of watch that has historically generated extraordinary demand relative to supply. The 5980/1A Nautilus Chronograph preceded it, but the 5968A brought something new: colour, energy, and a design language that appealed to collectors who found the Nautilus too formal or too closely associated with the investment-watch market. The orange accents gave the 5968A its own identity, and that identity has proven durable. On the secondary market, the 5968A trades at a significant premium to its retail price, reflecting both the limited availability of steel Patek Philippe sports watches and the genuine desirability of this particular reference. It is the Aquanaut that made the collection impossible to overlook, and the chronograph that proved Patek Philippe's sports watch ambitions extend well beyond the Nautilus.
