About the brand

The inscription on every F.P. Journe dial reads "Invenit et Fecit," Latin for "he invented and made it." It is not marketing. It is a factual claim, and it is one that very few watchmakers in history could legitimately make. François-Paul Journe designs his own movements, manufactures them in his own facility, and finishes them to standards that he sets. The Chronomètre Optimum is the fullest expression of that claim: a watch containing a patented escapement that exists nowhere else, a constant-force mechanism refined over decades, and a movement constructed in 18k rose gold because Journe determined that it performs better than brass.

The willingness to produce off-catalogue configurations like this rose gold example with a grey dial reveals something about how Journe operates that the standard catalogue does not fully convey. Despite growing demand and secondary market prices that have risen dramatically, Journe's workshop remains small, his production numbers remain low, and his willingness to accommodate specific collector requests remains intact. The grey dial on a rose gold case is not a revolutionary departure. It is a subtle inversion, a recombination of existing elements into a configuration that the catalogue does not offer. But the fact that it exists at all tells you that Journe's relationship with his collectors is personal rather than transactional, and that the brand retains the flexibility of a true artisan workshop even as its commercial success has grown.

The Chronomètre Optimum sits at the apex of the Journe collection because it contains every innovation Journe considers essential to precision timekeeping, assembled into a single watch. The remontoir d'égalité, the bi-axial escapement, the twin parallel barrels, the rose gold movement construction: each of these elements appears in other Journe watches, but only the Optimum combines them all. In this off-catalogue rose gold and grey dial configuration, the watch gains an additional layer of distinction: the visual proof that this particular example was made for a collector who understood exactly what the Optimum represents and wanted it in a form as singular as the mechanics inside.

About the watch

François-Paul Journe has always maintained a quiet willingness to produce watches outside the standard catalogue for collectors who know what they want. The off-catalogue Chronomètre Optimum in rose gold with a grey dial is one such piece, and its significance lies not in any mechanical difference from the standard production versions but in the deliberate inversion of the brand's established aesthetic logic. Journe's pairings are considered and consistent: rose gold cases receive warm pink gold dials, platinum cases receive cooler grey dials. The material harmony between case and dial is part of the design language. To break that pairing, to place the grey dial inside the rose gold case, is to create a tension between warm and cool that the standard versions avoid. The result is a watch with a character that neither standard configuration possesses.

The 40 mm rose gold case is polished to Journe's usual standard, with the clean, unadorned surfaces and the rope-knurled flat crown at three o'clock that have defined his case design since the earliest days of the brand. At 10.1 mm thick, the Optimum wears like a dress watch despite the density of its mechanical content, and the 40 mm diameter, the smaller of the two available sizes, gives it a classical proportion on the wrist. The rose gold is Journe's 18k formulation, a warm, saturated tone that glows in natural light and takes on a deeper, almost amber quality in lower light conditions. Against this warm case, the grey guilloché dial creates a contrast that the pink-dial version does not attempt. Where the standard rose gold Optimum is tonally unified, warm throughout, this off-catalogue example introduces a cool centre to a warm frame, and the interplay between the two temperatures gives the watch a visual depth that rewards sustained attention.

The grey dial itself is executed in the same guilloché technique as the standard versions, with clous de Paris decoration on the subsidiary areas creating a fine, light-catching texture across the surface. The main time display, positioned on the right side of the dial in Journe's characteristic asymmetric layout, features Arabic numerals on a silvered guilloché chapter ring. The subsidiary seconds at eight o'clock displays a small seconds hand ticking in the deadbeat style, each tick corresponding precisely to one cycle of the remontoir. The power reserve indicator, positioned at the lower left of the dial, tracks the remaining energy with a blued steel hand against a scale marked from zero to seventy hours, with a red zone indicating the final portion of the reserve. The inscription along the lower edge of the dial reads "Remontoir d'Égalité avec Échappement BHP," a technical declaration that would be redundant on almost any other watch but on the Optimum functions as a statement of intent: this watch contains both a constant-force device and a patented high-performance escapement, and Journe wants you to know it.

The remontoir wheel, visible through an aperture at the upper left of the dial, is the Optimum's most mesmerising visual detail. The titanium remontoir completes one full rotation every second, and watching it tick through its cycle is both a visual pleasure and a functional confirmation that the constant-force system is operating. The remontoir is the mechanism that ensures the escapement receives a precisely equal dose of energy with every tick, regardless of the mainspring's state of wind. By interposing this secondary spring between the barrel and the escapement, Journe eliminates the variation in force that causes amplitude changes in the balance wheel, which in turn cause timekeeping errors. The choice of titanium for the remontoir is practical: its low mass means the mechanism requires less energy to drive, leaving more power available for the escapement and contributing to the 70-hour power reserve that the twin parallel mainspring barrels provide.

The Échappement Bi-axial Haute Performance is the component that exists in no other wristwatch. The traditional Swiss lever escapement, used in virtually every mechanical watch produced in the last century, relies on a sliding contact between the pallet stones and the escape wheel teeth. This sliding generates friction, and friction is the single greatest source of energy loss in a mechanical movement. Journe's patented bi-axial escapement replaces the sliding contact with a rolling one, operating on two axes rather than the single axis of the Swiss lever. The reduction in friction is substantial, and the practical consequence is an escapement that is both more efficient and longer-lasting than the industry standard. Combined with the remontoir, it creates a chronometric system in which the force delivered to the escapement is constant and the transmission of that force is maximally efficient. The Calibre 1510, built entirely in 18k rose gold with 44 jewels and beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, is the most mechanically advanced time-only movement in current production by any maker, and Journe's decision to construct it in rose gold rather than brass reflects his conviction that movement materials affect performance, not just appearance.

Through the sapphire caseback, the Calibre 1510 is displayed in its entirety, and the rose gold construction of the bridges and mainplate creates a warm, unified surface across the movement. The finishing is to Journe's standard: Côtes de Genève on the bridges, bevelled and polished edges, blued screws, and the signature engraving "F.P. Journe, Invenit et Fecit," he invented and made it, the declaration that has appeared on every Journe movement since the brand's founding and that reflects his insistence on designing and manufacturing his movements in-house.

For collectors, this off-catalogue example represents something beyond the already rarefied world of the standard Chronomètre Optimum. The Optimum is produced in small numbers under any circumstances, limited by the complexity of assembling and regulating the bi-axial escapement and the remontoir. An off-catalogue configuration, requiring a specific request and a relationship with the brand, narrows the field further. The rose gold case with grey dial is a combination that most collectors will never have seen in person, and its existence speaks to the kind of bespoke flexibility that only the smallest independent watchmakers can offer. It is a watch made for someone who already knew everything about the Optimum and wanted it in a form that no catalogue could provide.
