About the brand

Every watch F.P. Journe produces carries the inscription "Invenit et Fecit," and the Chronomètre Souverain is the watch that makes the meaning of those words most transparent. There are no complications to distract from the movement's fundamental purpose. There is no tourbillon, no resonance mechanism, no remontoir. There is only the movement itself, keeping time, and the quality with which it does so is entirely a function of how well it was designed, constructed, and finished. The Chronomètre Souverain is the Journe that has nowhere to hide.

François-Paul Journe's trajectory as a watchmaker has been defined by an increasing ambition in complication, from the Tourbillon Souverain to the Résonance to the Optimum, each new creation more mechanically complex than the last. But the Chronomètre Souverain has remained in the collection throughout, unchanged in its fundamental architecture, because it represents something that complexity cannot replace: the discipline of making a simple thing superbly well. The twin barrels, the free-sprung balance, the 18k rose gold construction, the 4 mm movement height: each of these details is a specific engineering choice made in service of chronometric performance, not visual impact. The watch that results from these choices is, by any measurable standard, one of the finest time-only wristwatches ever made.

For collectors who have progressed through Journe's more complex offerings and returned to the Chronomètre Souverain, or for those beginning their collection with the watch that best represents what the brand stands for, the rose gold CS with its silver dial is the essential Journe. It is the watch that proves the brand's founding claim: that one man designed it, one workshop built it, and the quality speaks for itself.

About the watch

The Chronomètre Souverain occupies a unique position in the F.P. Journe catalogue. It is not the most complicated watch Journe makes. It is not the most technically innovative, that distinction belongs to the Résonance or the Optimum. It is not the most visually dramatic, the Tourbillon Souverain claims that ground. What the Chronomètre Souverain is, and has been since its introduction, is the most distilled expression of Journe's philosophy: that the highest purpose of a wristwatch is to keep time well, and that keeping time well requires not complexity but refinement, not more components but better ones, not visual spectacle but mechanical substance.

The 40 mm rose gold case is polished to a warm lustre, with the clean, unadorned surfaces that characterise Journe's case design. At 8 mm thick, the Chronomètre Souverain is remarkably slim for a manually wound watch with twin barrels, and it wears on the wrist with the low, intimate profile of a classical dress watch. The rose gold has the rich, saturated tone that Journe uses consistently across his collection, and the polished case catches light with a softness that satin-brushed finishes cannot replicate. The flat crown with its rope-knurled edge sits at three o'clock, and the sapphire crystals on both sides of the case provide visual access to the dial and, through the caseback, the full movement. The proportions are considered to the millimetre: the bezel is narrow, maximising the dial's visual area; the lugs are gently curved to follow the wrist's contour; and the overall silhouette, viewed in profile, is a slim, elegant disc that disappears under a shirt cuff.

The silver dial is where the Chronomètre Souverain's design intelligence is most apparent. The layout is asymmetric, with the subsidiary seconds at seven o'clock and the power reserve indicator at three o'clock, an arrangement that creates a visual balance without the formality of symmetry. The Arabic numeral hour markers are rendered in rose gold, matching the case and the elegantly shaped hour and minute hands, which taper to fine points with a central spine that catches light along its length. The minute track is printed with quiet precision around the dial's perimeter, and the "F.P. Journe, Invenit et Fecit" inscription sits beneath twelve o'clock, centred between the two sub-dials. The silver surface has a fine-grained opaline quality that diffuses light evenly, creating a luminous ground against which the rose gold numerals and hands appear to float. The power reserve indicator, with its fan-shaped aperture displaying the remaining hours from zero to 56, is one of Journe's signature dial elements, and its position at three o'clock, balanced by the seconds sub-dial at seven, gives the dial its characteristic visual rhythm.

The Calibre 1304 is the movement that justifies the Chronomètre Souverain's name. "Souverain" implies sovereignty, authority, supremacy, and the 1304 earns these associations through its engineering rather than its complexity. The movement is manually wound, with twin mainspring barrels mounted in series that deliver torque to the escapement with a linearity that single-barrel movements cannot match. The advantage of twin barrels is not simply a longer power reserve, though the 56 hours the 1304 provides is generous. It is the quality of the power delivery: the force reaching the escapement remains more consistent throughout the wind-down cycle, which translates directly to more stable amplitude in the balance wheel and, consequently, more accurate timekeeping. The free-sprung balance, oscillating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), is regulated by adjusting inertia screws on the balance rim rather than by a regulator index, a method that avoids the slight friction and positional sensitivity that a conventional regulator introduces. The entire movement, bridges and mainplate, is constructed in 18k rose gold, a material choice that Journe adopted for its superior dimensional stability and that gives the movement, visible through the caseback, a warm, unified appearance that brass-based movements do not achieve.

Through the sapphire caseback, the Calibre 1304 is displayed with the full finishing that the Patek Philippe Seal or the Geneva Seal would require, executed to a standard that arguably exceeds both. Côtes de Genève on the bridges, perlage on the mainplate, bevelled and hand-polished edges, blued screws, and the large rose gold winding click with its polished surfaces: every detail is resolved to a level that rewards inspection at any magnification. The movement measures just 4 mm thick, which means the bridges and plates are themselves thin, and finishing thin components to this standard without distortion or damage requires exceptional manual skill. The 1304 is not a movement that impresses through visible complication. It impresses through the quality of its execution, and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing that every component, visible or not, is finished to the same absolute standard.

For collectors, the Chronomètre Souverain in rose gold is the Journe that anchors a collection. It is the watch you wear when the occasion calls for something beautiful and mechanically serious but not ostentatious. It is the watch that other watchmakers, when asked privately what they admire, tend to name. And it is the watch that, over two decades of production, has proven itself to be one of those rare designs that does not age, because it was never fashionable in the first place. It was simply right.

At The Second Hand Club, we are committed advocates for the exceptional quality of our curated selection of pre-owned timepieces and mechanical objects. In the event of an unexpected issue, we remain committed to addressing it promptly and effectively. Our client's trust and satisfaction are paramount to our entire team.

Each pre-owned watch in our collection has been meticulously examined using non-intrusive methods to confirm their mechanical integrity. Where necessary, servicing has been performed to guarantee they align with our highest standards for timekeeping precision and functional performance.

Unless explicitly indicated, our pre-owned watches are protected by either a comprehensive or a limited warranty for a period of twenty-four months. However, this warranty does not cover damages resulting from accidents or misuse. Given their vintage status, pre-owned watches may not withstand the same conditions as brand new models.

We have a no refund policy, which means that all sales are final.
