About the brand

François-Paul Journe's career has been defined by a willingness to solve problems that other watchmakers consider either impossible or not worth attempting. The Résonance proved that acoustic resonance could stabilise a wristwatch. The Sonnerie Souveraine demonstrated that a grande and petite sonnerie could be made reliable enough for daily wear. The Centigraphe Souverain proved that hundredth-of-a-second measurement could be achieved without the architectural excess that conventional approaches demand. Each of these watches advanced the state of the art, and each did so in a way that was distinctly Journe: elegant, efficient, and rooted in a deep understanding of historical chronometry.

Journe founded his brand in 1999 under the motto "invenit et fecit," invented and made. The phrase is not decorative. Every calibre bearing the Journe name is conceived, developed, and produced within his Geneva manufacture, from the earliest sketches through to final regulation. The transition from brass to 18k rose gold movements in 2004 marked a philosophical commitment to material quality that extended beyond finishing into the structural fabric of the watches themselves. Rose gold movements are more expensive to produce, more difficult to machine, and offer no functional advantage over brass. Journe chose them because he believed the material was more beautiful and more worthy of the work invested in each calibre. That kind of decision, prioritising conviction over commercial logic, is what separates Journe from the broader industry.

The Centigraphe Souverain represents Journe at his most inventive. Where the Chronomètre Souverain and the Octa collection demonstrate his mastery of classical watchmaking forms, the Centigraphe ventures into territory where engineering ambition takes precedence over tradition. It is the work of a maker who treats each watch as a problem to be solved rather than a template to be followed. For collectors, the platinum Centigraphe with grey dial is a rare intersection of Journe's most creative mechanical thinking with one of his most refined material and aesthetic combinations.

About the watch

The challenge of measuring one hundredth of a second mechanically is one that most watchmakers have either avoided entirely or addressed through elaborate multi-system solutions. Separate gear trains, twin barrels, dual regulators: these are the conventional approaches, and they result in movements of considerable thickness and complexity. François-Paul Journe took a different path. The Centigraphe Souverain drives its hundredth-of-a-second hand from the same single barrel and gear train that powers the timekeeping function, achieving its extraordinary measurement resolution through a system of gearing ratios rather than brute-force mechanical multiplication. The result is a chronograph that can time to 1/100th of a second within a case that measures just 40 mm across in platinum, with a profile that remains wearable rather than monumental.

The platinum case carries the weight and presence that collectors of Journe's Souverain line expect. Platinum's cool, silvery density gives the watch a physical substance that rose gold and aluminium variants do not share, and at 40 mm the proportions sit comfortably between dress watch discretion and instrument-like authority. The case finishing follows Journe's established standards: polished surfaces, clean transitions, and a sapphire caseback that invites inspection of the movement within. On the wrist, the platinum Centigraphe has a particular gravity to it, both literal and figurative. This is not a watch that disappears under a cuff. It announces itself through weight and through the quiet confidence of its dial layout.

The grey dial is a variant that has gained considerable collector appreciation in recent years. Against the platinum case, the grey tone creates a near-monochromatic palette that feels more restrained and contemporary than the silver or black alternatives. The three chronograph counters are arranged across the dial in a layout that is immediately distinctive: a large central hand for the hundredth-of-a-second measurement, a sub-dial for the ten-second counter, and a second sub-dial for the ten-minute totalizer. Each counter operates independently, started, stopped, and reset through the chronograph pushers, and the visual effect of the central hand completing a full revolution every second is mesmerising. It moves with a speed and fluidity that looks almost electronic, a jarring reminder of just how fast mechanical components can be made to operate when the engineering is right.

The Calibre 1506 is executed in 18k rose gold, Journe's standard for movement construction since the transition from brass in 2004. The rose gold architecture, visible through the caseback, provides a warm contrast to the cool platinum case and grey dial on the other side. Finishing follows the standards expected at this level: circular Côtes de Genève on the bridges, bevelled edges, polished screw slots, and careful detailing throughout. The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour for timekeeping, but the chronograph's hundredth-of-a-second hand is driven at a dramatically higher frequency through gearing, completing ten rotations per second. Managing the energy demands of that speed within a single-barrel architecture, while maintaining chronometric stability for the timekeeping function, is the core engineering achievement of the Centigraphe. Journe solved the problem by keeping the high-frequency element mechanically isolated from the escapement, ensuring that engaging the chronograph does not affect the watch's rate.

From a collector's standpoint, the Centigraphe Souverain in platinum with grey dial sits in rarefied territory. The Centigraphe was never produced in large numbers relative to the Chronomètre Souverain or the Octa collection, and the platinum execution with the grey dial is among the less frequently encountered configurations. As Journe's production has shifted and certain references have been discontinued or evolved, early and mid-production Centigraphe examples have gained significant collector momentum. The watch appeals to a specific type of collector: someone who values intellectual mechanical achievement over conventional complication hierarchy, and who understands that measuring time to one hundredth of a second with a single mainspring is, in many ways, a more impressive feat than a tourbillon or a perpetual calendar.

At The Second Hand Club, we are committed advocates for the exceptional quality of our curated selection of pre-owned timepieces and mechanical objects. In the event of an unexpected issue, we remain committed to addressing it promptly and effectively. Our client's trust and satisfaction are paramount to our entire team.

Each pre-owned watch in our collection has been meticulously examined using non-intrusive methods to confirm their mechanical integrity. Where necessary, servicing has been performed to guarantee they align with our highest standards for timekeeping precision and functional performance.

Unless explicitly indicated, our pre-owned watches are protected by either a comprehensive or a limited warranty for a period of twenty-four months. However, this warranty does not cover damages resulting from accidents or misuse. Given their vintage status, pre-owned watches may not withstand the same conditions as brand new models.
